Admission Planner: Community College Transfer Students

Students who plan to transfer to OSU to major in Botany can save effort, time and money by carefully planning your Community College program.  Students should begin fulfilling math, science, writing and general education (OSU Baccalaureate Core) classes before transferring to OSU.  The course articulation website at OSU should be checked to see how courses at your college will be transferred for OSU credit.

The course charts on this page will help you select courses and plan your community college curriculum.

BPP recommends that students planning to transfer specifically complete:

  • Year-long majors biology series with a lab (do not take non-majors biology)
  • Year-long general chemistry with labs
  • Math courses as needed through at least elementary functions (MTH 112).
  • Writing I  (you may also complete Writing II and III requirements)

Other Science and Math courses for the Botany Major:

  • Organic Chemistry is a Botany requirement that is offered by some Community Colleges.
  • 2 additional courses in Quantitative skills.  This can be fulfilled by additional math, physics, or computer science classes.

Other general education requirements at OSU (the Baccalaureate Core):
Math, Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses satisfy the OSU core requirements in sciences and math.  As part of your Community College studies, you should also take courses to meet other OSU requirements in Skills, Perspectives, and Difference, Power, & Discrimination.

If you have questions or need more information, contact the OSU Botany Head Advisor: Melanie Link-Perez   melanie.link-perez@oregonstate.edu   (541) 737-5297

Meetings with advisors and campus tours for prospective transfer students can be arranged through VISIT OSU.  All transfer students, including those in the Degree Partnership Program, must attend a required transfer START orientation that includes advising and registration. OSU Admissions Transfer Students Page which covers general policies; provides tables of approved transfer course articulations; discusses degree partnership and transfer degree programs.

Other Baccalaureate Core Courses: BCC requirements for biological science, physical science, and math are completed as part of the Botany Major requirements, as shown above.  As part of your Community College studies, you should also take courses to meet OSU requirements in other Perspectives, Difference, Power, & Discrimination, and Skills areas.  Check the Equivalency Tables found on the OSU website to learn which of your Community College courses meet these requirements:

Perspectives courses:  Complete one course in each Perspectives category with no more than two in the same department.  Use the Baccalaureate Core Transfer Guide to find the courses at your community college that meet OSU requirements in these areas:

      Cultural Diversity

       Literature and the Arts

       Social Process and Institutions

      Western Culture

Biol and Physical Sciences requirements completed as part of the major requirements

DPD:  Difference, Power, and Discrimination

Use the Baccalaureate Core Transfer Guide to find the courses at your community college that meet OSU requirements in this area.

Skills courses

Math requirement completed as part of major requirements, shown above

Writing, and Speech are shown above.

Health / Fitness,  Use the Baccalaureate Core Transfer Guide to find the courses at your community college that meet OSU requirements in this area.

All courses in the major must be letter graded; no P/NP.  At least a C- grade is required in lower division math and science courses as a pre-requisite to upper division courses.

All courses in a series should be taken at one institution:  Take course series’ in Biological Principles, General Chem, Organic Chem, and Physics all at one institution (Community College or OSU).  DO NOT split the series between schools.  Although the course numbers are the same, the order of topics is not the same.

Biology, Chem and Physics courses should be taken with labs:  Some Community Colleges have separately numbered lab courses.  To qualify for OSU transfer credit, you must enroll in the labs/ recitations, as well as the lecture sections.

*Organic Chemistry credits transfer as lower division, but meet OSU major requirements in the life sciences.  You can receive upper division units by passing the ACS Organic Chemistry exam.  Information found at here.
