BRIAN ATKINSON AWARDED BEST STUDENT PALEOBOTANY TALK AT BSA 2016
At the Botanical Society of America (BSA) 2016 meetings in Savannah, GA, Brian Atkinson was awarded the Isabel Cookson award for the best student talk in the paleobotany section. His presentation was a characterization of three new cornalean taxa, based on fruit morphology, from the Late Cretaceous of Vancouver Island. Specifically, the fossils that he described are among the earliest Cornales known to date. He further discussed the evolutionary implications of the fossils as they pertain to the initial diversification of Cornales and the asterid clade.
