The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position. For full consideration, applications must be received by April 30, 2019.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish an innovative and competitive research program that pursues scholarly work in the area of plant biology. Within this broad area of research, the candidate will investigate how biological mechanisms at multiple levels (molecular, cellular and organismal) enable plant function and generate plant phenotypes. The research will use innovative experimental approaches – e.g., Genome Wide Association Studies, high-throughput phenotyping, advanced microscopy, quantitative genomics, and/or modeling/perturbation analysis – that leverage and integrate large biological datasets (e.g., on genomes, transcriptomes, phenomes). The candidate’s expertise will bolster one of the Department’s three primary research areas, Plant Function, and will also strengthen and diversify the research capabilities of the interdisciplinary Plant Breeding and Genetics program, which bridges the College of Agricultural Sciences and the College of Forestry. The successful candidate will teach an undergraduate upper division course in Genetics, and one upper division course in Biological Data Sciences (BDS), an undergraduate major currently being developed.
The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology (BPP) focuses on fundamental aspects of plant and fungal biology, and translation of that knowledge to address important societal issues. Research interests encompass plant health, plant function, plant-microbe and -insect interactions, plant and microbial genomics, computational biology, evolutionary biology, and ecology of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. BPP is also the primary research and extension unit within OSU addressing diseases of economically important crops in Oregon, and plant diseases of worldwide significance. BPP is in the College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS), one of Oregon’s principal sources of knowledge relating to food, agricultural, and natural resource systems, and a major source of knowledge regarding environmental quality, natural resources, biodiversity, life sciences, and rural economies and communities worldwide. CAS faculty are committed to enhancing student success by engaging students in quality academic, research, internships, global studies, and other experiential learning opportunities.
