About Biological Data Sciences (BDS)

Welcome from the Director

A degree in BDS provides a wealth of career and graduate school opportunities. Advances, such as next generation sequencing, drones, satellite imagery, and crowd sourcing, have transformed the life sciences by enabling data collection to occur at speeds and scales previously unimaginable. This paradigm shift in how researchers answer biological questions has resulted in an ever-increasing need for scientists with appropriate expertise in both biological and quantitative thinking.

We collaborated with colleagues across the Oregon State University campus to develop an undergraduate life science program that integrates biological computing, statistics, and mathematics. BDS emphasizes learning in cohorts and teaching skills important for today’s life sciences. Students can pursue specialized interests by selecting from one of three options in Genomics, Ecological and Environmental Informatics, and Computational Biology.

To apply, please visit the OSU Office of Admissions. Explore our program website to view examples of four-year plans, the BDS minor, associated faculty, and new BDS courses. For any questions, please contact me (email: changj@oregonstate.edu and include the subject line, “Q: BDS”).

We look forward to seeing you on the OSU campus!
