Biological Data Sciences Program
We are excited to offer a transdisciplinary undergraduate major and minor in Biological Data Sciences (BDS). BDS is administered by the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, and offered in collaboration with faculty from Botany and Plant Pathology, Computer Science, Fisheries and Wildlife, Horticulture, Microbiology, and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Note: Changes have been made to the BDS major, options, and minor effective Fall 2022
Congratulations to the 2024 graduating class!
This is the third cohort of students that will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Data Sciences (BDS), a program that started in 2019.
Like past years, this cohort of student explored and capitalized on the many opportunities available at Oregon State University. BDS offers students a diversity of courses in biology, computer science, statistics, and math. Importantly, students participate in highly impactful research experiences that help them identify their future career paths.
The 2024 graduates:
Connor Eck (B.S. BDS; computational biology option) will be working as a bioinformatician analyzing medical data and plans on attending graduate school in the future.
Daniel Hickey (H.B.S. BDS; computational biology option) is starting graduate school and will be pursuing a PhD in information science.
Arjun Subramanian (H.B.S. BDS; computational biology option) will be working on data engineering at a computer corporation. He plans on attending graduate school in the future.
Congratulations to our graduates. We are proud of you!
Undergraduate Success
Congratulations to Jewell Jung and Andrea Schiffer for publishing “Beav: a bacterial genome and mobile element annotation pipeline” in mSphere. These two undergraduate students are researchers in the laboratory of Dr. Alexandra Weisberg, the corresponding author. Dr. Arafat Rahman is an equal first-author contributor on this paper.
Jewell and Andrea both participated in an REEU “Undergraduate Learning Experiences in Working with Big Data in Agriculture” summer internship program funded by USDA-NIFA and run by the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology. Jewell majored in Microbiology while Andrea is majoring in Biological Data Sciences.
Congratulations to both students on an amazing accomplishment!
