Community and Belonging

Belonging and Shared Purpose Statement

As members of the Department of Botany & Plant Pathology, we are committed to cultivating a community where people feel valued, respected, and supported in their work and learning. We believe that bringing together individuals with a wide range of experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds strengthens our teaching, research, scholarship, engagement, and public outreach.

We welcome all individuals—across differences in lived experience, identity, culture, background, and ability—and work to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate fully in the life sciences and related fields. Our efforts focus on creating pathways for broader participation by offering meaningful mentorship, fostering a sense of belonging, and supporting the growth and success of members who have historically had limited access to these disciplines.

Mission Statement for Diversity Committee

Our mission is to expand opportunities for participation and connection among students, staff, and faculty—particularly those who have not always been well represented in the life sciences. The Community and Inclusion Committee works to build strong relationships within and beyond the department, support equitable recruitment and hiring practices, and encourage greater awareness of the value that diverse experiences bring to our academic and professional environment.

We also aim to broaden the department’s outreach efforts by partnering with K–12 schools and community organizations to provide enriching STEM learning experiences for youth, especially in communities that have had limited access to such resources.
